It is important to prioritize electrical safety practices in warehouse, manufacturing, and industrial environments where electrical hazards pose a significant threat to workers and facilities. From electrical shock to arc flash in the workplace, these hazards can lead to injuries, property damage, and even loss of life. Implement these 10 safety tips to significantly reduce the risk of electrical accidents, safeguard your workforce, and protect your operations from electrical hazards.
1. Mandate Lockout/Tagout Procedures
Required by OSHA, proper lockout/tagout procedures prevent the unintentional discharge of energy from machinery and equipment when not in use. Implementing standardized lockout/tagout procedures—and reinforcing them with visual cues—ensures that machines are properly turned down, locked, and tagged accordingly for optimal safety during maintenance, repairs, or equipment downtime.
2. Clearly Label Electrical Hazards
Any electrical equipment or machinery could become a hazard in certain circumstances, whether that’s a risk of shock or arc flash hazards. OSHA 1910.303(e)¹ requires employers to label electrical equipment with descriptive markings that indicate voltage, current, wattage, or other ratings relevant to worker safety. OSHA 1910.335(b)² also requires employers to use alerting techniques to warn and protect employees from “hazards which could cause injury due to electric shock, burns, or failure of electric equipment parts.”
3. Maintain Clearance in Front of Electrical Panels
In addition to clearly labeling electrical panels with appropriate, compliant signage, the area in front of electrical panels should be kept clear. This ensures easy access to shut off power in an emergency, to prevent individuals from getting too close to shock hazards, and to prevent overheating of electrical components, which can cause fires. 4. Provide Clear Visual Cues for Electrical Hazards
Employ color-coded systems or other visual indicators to highlight electrical hazards or areas in which extreme caution should be urged. Whether you’re implementing floor tape and signage or wall-mount messaging, use OSHA and ANSI color standards to indicate level of risk and ensure compliance in the language you use. (The terms “Warning,” “Danger,” and “Caution” all indicate different levels of risk and are not interchangeable in OSHA-governed environments.)
5. Implement Clear Emergency Shutdown Procedures
Procedures for emergency shutdown of electrical equipment should be included in your facility’s emergency action plan. This plan should include which staff members are responsible for shutdown, the standardized sequence of steps to shutdown, and guidelines and frequency for training.
6. Provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
OSHA 1910.132³ requires that employers provide personal protective equipment (PPE) “where it is necessary by reason of hazards of process or environment,” but leaves specific guidance to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Personal protective equipment for employees who work with electrical hazards may include:
- Footwear that provides shock resistance and protection against conductive hazards (labeled EH and Cd, respectively)
- Class G or E head protection where there is risk of electrical shock or burns
- Safety glasses and face shields
- Insulating gloves and sleeves to protect hands from contact with energized circuits and other electrical shocks
- Flame-resistant arc flash clothing

7. Do Not Overload Circuits
Overloaded circuits can lead to arc flash, electrical shocks, equipment malfunction, and even fires, making proper use integral to electrical safety. During regular inspections and daily walk-throughs, ensure circuits are not overloaded. Post custom signs at electrical panels to remind employees of the maximum electrical capacity and emphasize the importance of staying within an appropriate range. If your load regularly exceeds 80 percent of electrical capacity, it may be time to upgrade your panel.
8. Ensure Proper Grounding
Proper grounding prevents electrical shocks and fires by providing a safe path for electrical currents to flow in case of fault. All conductive parts of equipment should be grounded, and updating standard outlets with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) can improve safety in areas with high moisture or potential for water contact.
9. Schedule Regular Employee Training
Employees should be thoroughly trained on the proper use of any equipment or apparatus that poses an electrical risk, including the required PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and emergency response. Schedule training on an annual basis, and include refresher training for employees when they start work or transition to a new position, when equipment is updated or standards change, or following a preventable accident or injury.
10. Perform Routine Inspections
Regular, routine inspections are central to electrical safety in warehouse, industrial, and manufacturing facilities. While large machinery and electrical panels are obvious sites of potential hazards and should be maintained and inspected regularly, there are areas in which electrical risks may come from oversight, ignorance, or even negligence. During routine inspections, you should also double-check electrical wiring, loads, and connections.
