When the lights go out at your home, typically you make your way to the drawer with the flashlights or the cabinet with the extra candles, secure an alternative source of light and wait it out. If an emergency popped up, most would be able to make their way to an exit if needed, due to familiarity to the home’s layout and the small space between most rooms in a home and an exit.
However, the story could be different in large offices or manufacturing facilities. To get from an upper level office to a ground floor exit could be precarious in dark stairwells. And to make your way across a large production floor in the dark, with hundreds of other employees, that could be dangerous for all.
Why use Glow-in-the-Dark Floor Tape?
While OSHA requires exit signs to be lit in power failures, having emergency paths outlined with glow-in-the dark tape leading to the exits could be a life-saving investment. According to several news reports covering the 9/11 Commission hearings in 2003, survivors who survived the 9/11 attacks told investigators they followed the “funny green glow stuff” down dark stairwells to safety outside the building.
The funny green glow stuff was glow-in-the-dark materials placed on handrails, stairs, doors and landings, meant to guide people out of the building in the event of a power failure.
In fact, in 2004, New York City adopted building codes that require photo luminescent markings along exit paths in all commercial buildings 75 feet tall and higher. Today, this is a safety ordinance that has been adopted in many cities throughout the U.S.
